Because of the breadth of academic programs available at the University of Georgia and the unique requirements of many programs, academic advising is decentralized to the individual schools and colleges. Academic advising is required of all students every term, but students register for classes themselves and so are ultimately responsible for the courses they take and their progress toward degrees.
The Office of the Vice President for Instruction is charged with providing oversight of and support to undergraduate academic advising, advisors, and students in all schools and colleges. This is accomplished in several ways, primarily through the Academic Advising Coordinating Council. Other means which provide information, support and recognition include the Outstanding Academic Advisor Award, and the Chief Transfer Officer.
