The National Survey of Student Engagement
Begins February 21st, 2011
The National Survey of Student Engagement (NSSE, pronounced nessie) surveys freshmen and senior students about their academic experiences. NSSE was developed by the Indiana University Center for Postsecondary Research and has been in use since 2000.
NSSE was first administered at UGA in 2003, then again in 2005 and 2007. In 2008, 773 colleges and universities in the US and Canada, including the University of Georgia, participated in NSSE. Approximately 4000 freshmen and 4000 seniors at UGA were invited to participate in the 2008 NSSE. Results are presented in the reports listed below.
UGA is again participating in NSSE in spring 2011. Most freshmen and seniors will be sent invitations in February. A campus-wide steering committee is again coordinating the administration and analysis of results.
The National Survey of Student Engagement provides important information about the quality of undergraduate education. At UGA, several major initiatives have been developed or expanded as a result of responses in past years, including the creation of the Office of Service Learning, UGA Writing Centers, Learning Communities, the Provost’s Task Force on General Education and Student Learning, and the Bulldog Book Club.
In addition to the NSSE, UGA participated in the Faculty Survey of Student Engagement (FSSE) in 2008. We also have begun participating in the Beginning College Survey of Student Engagement (BCSSE) given to freshmen during summer orientation in 2010 and 2011.
