Pegan Named Interim EL Director

Scott Pegan has been named Interim Director of the University of Georgia’s Office of Experiential Learning, a unit of the Office of Instruction, while the search for a permanent director continues into the fall semester. His position is effective Friday, Sept. 14.
Dr. Pegan joined UGA’s College of Pharmacy in 2014 and is an Associate Professor who serves as Director of UGA’s Center for Drug Discovery. Through his role as University Council Executive Committee Chair from 2017-2018 and as current chair of the University System of Georgia Faculty Council, he has developed a broad understanding of UGA schools, colleges and other units. Dr. Pegan has partnered for a number of years with industry and federal agencies on research as well as on U.S. and international patents for drug discoveries and is a requested panelist and speaker at numerous forums on drug discovery, viruses and structural biology.
Dr. Pegan previously served as assistant professor of chemistry and biochemistry at the University of Denver and as a research assistant professor of medicinal chemistry at the University of Illinois College of Pharmacy. At both UGA and DU, Dr. Pegan has redesigned undergraduate chemistry and pharmacy courses to provide students with hands-on scientific experiences in research, presentation and writing, as well as opportunities for practical application of computational and cheminformatic techniques.
His current research focuses on the regulation of the human innate immune system, the discovery of new therapeutics for nerve and pesticide agent poisoning, and the discovery of new antibiotics for use against tuberculosis. He earned his Ph.D. in Chemistry and Biochemistry from the University of California in San Diego. He is a U.S. Army Operation Iraqi Freedom combat veteran and a U.S. Army Reserve Major and biochemist for the United States Medical Research Institute of Chemical Defense.
