With the summer semester winding down this week and new student orientations coming to a close, we're preparing for the beginning of a new academic year and new goals to improve student engagement and achievement. In a couple of weeks, we'll not only be welcoming our students back to campus, but also have about 300 new faculty join the UGA family.
People I meet outside of the university often ask me if our office slows down for the summer. They are surprised when I tell them that on the contrary, we actually pick up the pace as we work on new student orientation, preparing for the Fall and Spring semesters and implementing various new projects for the upcoming year. This is probably no different in your areas as well.
Spring has become one of my favorite seasons--it's a time of celebration for our faculty and staff who have worked hard to improve the lives of UGA's students. Spring is when we recognize the innovative teaching and guidance of our faculty, teaching assistants, and advisors.
Honors Week is marked with celebrations of our most accomplished teachers and students, including winners of our Creative Teaching Award. I hope you've had the opportunity to participate in the various ceremonies recognizing and celebrating the accomplishments of the honorees from your schools and colleges.

Welcome back! As we settle into the routine of the spring semester, I wanted to share information about a few ongoing projects to improve our instructional infrastructure, support and services for students. I will be providing more detailed information about many of these efforts over the next several months, but here are the highlights.
Crosslisted courses have a long history at UGA and we currently have 1,663 such courses in our database. While many courses are crosslisted with just one additional prefix, such as CLAS(ANTH) 2000, others are crosslisted with multiple prefixes.
I hope that you had a restful holiday and were able to spend quality time with your families and friends. We've made a lot of progress on various initiatives in the last several months. As we begin this spring semester, we are looking ahead to further improving our instructional infrastructure, support and services for students and faculty. I will be sharing more detailed information about many of these efforts over the next several months, but I wanted to highlight some here.
Following a national search, Stephen P. Balfour has been named director of the University of Georgia Office of Online Learning. Balfour will begin his new position on Feb. 1.
